Sun 26th
Arrived at Penrith @ 12:30. There was a very cold North wind, today, but it was bright and sunny.
Cumbria is very rural with lots of big dairy units. One knows the wind direction as the cows always position their rear towards it.
There is a saying: "May the wind always be at your back." The bovine equivalent is - because of diet and the four stomachs - "May the wind, and your own, be at your back - the grass may be green, but the gas is methane." Whether this has an effect on climate change is a moo point.
I've been really impressed by the level of some people's trust. I met a farmer, with whom we were "shooting the bull" for a while, and when I said that I was walking for charity, he gave me a cash donation.
I was hoping that the Rose and Crown had accommodation, but unfortunately not. However the landland was very helpful, and I was able to stay at the Crossroads House, about five miles down the road. She came along picked me up, and took me back to the Rose and Crown, the next morning so that I could start off from point. I would certainly recommend them both.
