I forgot to mention earlier, but David - paratrooper-cum-pastor - told me that the route that I had followed from Tavistock to Exeter was an ancient pilgrim way. I found that quite encouraging, to walk in such foot-steps. As I've mentioned before the mystics of old, used to consider walking, as being sacramental.
In the whole concept of life's journey, they also believed in soft spots, where the metaphysical would break into our physical existence, from time to time. To couch in religious language, where the heavenly touched the earthly existence. They saw the eternal realm, not only as a future entity, but also as a present reality that was going on, very close to our life's sojourn.
On a more mundane level, I have noticed that the pathways I have used have been frequently strewn with banana skins. Now, my case is only circumstantial at present, but I believe the culprits to be those grey-haired, has-been, lycra-clad, peddlers, who discard the skins as they cycle. I have also noted literally hundreds of cyclists, but no one long distance walker.
My conspiracy theory is that they believe that cycling is the new world order, and they are trying to "exterminate" all the rugged long-distance walkers, with these slip hazards. If you remember the Daleks ran about on wheels, and also had great difficulty negotiating stairs!
For "soft spots", read "thin places" in Celtic Christianity circles. Certainly true in my experience that I feel closer to God in some places than others.
